25 years ago August 13, 1998 The Denver Post ran a story on Silverton with a nice photo of Silverton shops on Greene Street. The Post photo caption identified the shops as “shops near the railroad station in Durango.” The Hardrockers tug-o-war event is always popular.

130 YEARS AGO From the Aug. 12, 1893 edition of the Silverton Standard: 2ND MAN KILLED BY BEAR AT BEAR CREEK. Word was brought over from Bear creek last Tuesday that Con VanAlstin had been killed by a bear. If it is true, this will make the second man killed in that vicinity this summer.

SMR Team Overnight Rescue

On Wednesday, August 9th, around 8 pm, the San Juan County Sheriff and Silverton Medical Rescue Team received an SOS call from a bystander who witnessed 79-year-old Gerry Roach of Colorado violently fall over 200 feet down the mountainside.

Lightning-caused Fire on Forest Land in Archuleta County

Bayfield, Colo., August 2, 2023 – A San Juan National Forest Incident Management Team (IMT) took command of the Dry Lake Fire at 6:00 a.m. this morning. The lightning-caused fire is burning on forest land north of US Highway 160 between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs.

Growing Readers at the Silverton Library

Libraries and books have always been my way of retreating from the world. Some of my earliest memories are making Christmas crafts at the Silverton library, which my dad still has on our tree, or former librarian Jackie Kerwin reading to my elementary school class.
