The First Train of the Season Starts Saturday May 3

The Durango Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad’s first daily steam train to Silverton starts Saturday, May 3. It departs the Durango train station at 8:15, and the second train departs at 9:00 am, arriving in Silverton at 11:45 am and 12:30 pm. According to durangotrain.

Red-tailed hawks are the most widespread raptor in North America, and in the summer, they are a common sight in the San Juans. One can often see them circling high above Silverton as they search for prey. Their large wings allow them to soar and glide with ease.

140 YEARS AGO From the May 2, 1895 edition of the Silverton Standard: WORK UNDER WAY TO OPEN SILVERTON R.R. Wednesday morning the work of opening the Silverton railroad was commenced with a small force of men.

20 Years Ago April 29, 2005 Dave Erickson is moving on following almost 13 years in Silverton. The Town Administrator announced Monday that he is resigning, effective May 25. Erickson has accepted a job managing the Copper Mountain Metropolitan District.
After the new Colorado Highway Department was asked to take over the former Otto Mears toll road from Ouray to Silverton in 1916, portions of the route were rebuilt to locations much higher above the Uncompahgre River to avoid frequent flooding. In 1918, this was how a new portion of the road high above the river was being constructed. It was tough, painstaking work by hand and with explosives.
