The mountains outside Ouray and Lake City are charcoal, streaked with patches of green that managed to escape the flames. Along Highway 550, deep channels filled with mud and debris mark where water rushed down the newly formed burn scar. Now, as the flames begin to smolder, the forest begins its long story of recovery, and the surrounding communities hope for an economic recovery of their own.
