On Saturday, September 17th, local Silverton high schooler Rylan Jaramillo attended the FBI Teen Academy in Durango. Jaramillo, 14, was one of 20 teens who attended the FBI Teen Academy, which is part of an effort to diversify the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The San Juan County Commissioners are glad to announce that the comprehensive restoration of Silverton’s Miner’s Union Hospital was completed this year.
San Juan County was well represented at the SARCon conference (Colorado Search & Rescue conference hosted by Centra & Flight for Life) this past weekend in Breckenridge. San Juan County’s Emergency Manager Jim Donovan & Silverton Medical Rescue’s Johnathan Wilson both taught courses this year. We had many Silverton/San Juan County emergency team members and Silverton Avalanche School attend and participate in this search and rescue conference.

10 years ago Al Harper, owner of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, will meet with the community on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. upstairs at Town Hall. 20 years ago September 27, 2002 Junie, the official shop cat at the Crewell Elephant, is no more. Junie died earlier this week.

Pioneer in hunt for uranium ore, Phil Dodd dies at 90 in Silverton, Sept. 2012

Philip H. Dodd, a long-time resident of Silverton and Grand Junction, died on Sept. 19, 2012 at his home in Silverton at the age of 90. He was with his wife of 64 years and his nephew, Lou King. Phil was born in Charles City, Iowa, the only child of Horace and Marion (Smith) Dodd on Dec. 17, 1921.
