Freakin’ Beacon Was a Freakin’ Good Time

The second annual Freakin’ Beacon Fest hosted by Silverton Medical Rescue was a great learning opportunity and a freakin’ good time! Each team began the contest by traveling up the ski slope at Kendall Mountain Ski Area to be informed that an avalanche (pretend) had occurred.

Local Dog Lulu is Currently an Aspirant Avalanche Dog

Silverton local 20-monthold purebred Labrador Retriever Lucille (Lulu) and her owner Michael Ackerman are currently working towards their validation as an avalanche rescue team with the Silverton Avalanche School.

The San Juan Mountains are notorious for having a very dangerous snowpack leading to a large number of avalanches each year, with some even being visible from Highway 550. Because of this, backcountry travel in the winter can be dangerous even for the most prepared.
