25 Years Ago March 18, 1999 The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is refurbishing the Casey Jones railbus, a Silverton gem long out of commission, for the 1999 summer train season. The last refurbishing took place 70 years ago.

From the March 22, 1890 edition of the Silverton Standard: NO ONE SHOWS UP FOR WORK ON ST. PAT’S DAY AT RED MTN. St. Patrick’s day passed off very quietly in Silverton. The only place in this neighborhood where it was extensively celebrated appeared to be Red Mountain.

It was a snowy Saturday afternoon on February 10th this winter when a Silverton local, Rick Noble, got a gut feeling to head up to the Hillside Cemetery after his “dump day” ritual. Wednesdays and Saturdays here in Silverton have a “festive” feeling of “Oh, it’s dump day!
