130 YEARS AGO From the May 30, 1890 edition of the Silverton Standard: A SAD ACCIDENT. A sad accident happened in Durango about five o’clock last evening. Bob Hurley, while coupling a box car to a baggage car, was crushed between them and killed instantly.

130 YEARS AGO From the May 24, 1890 edition of the Silverton Standard: MULE TEAMS READY TO GO TO WORK. Merrill Dowd returned from a trip to New Mexico this week. He visited Lockhart’s herd and found nine of his eighty burros to answer the roll call.

6 to graduate from high school Friday

Silverton High School graduation will be conducted Friday, May 15, from 4-6 p.m. Community members please congratulate the graduates at 6 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a victory drive down main street, courtesy of the fire department.

10 Years Ago May 13, 2010 Over on Blair Street, Mike Geryak has been tinkering with a demonstration model of a solar-powered street lamp with an old-fashioned look. He put much of it together from materials scavenged from the dump, and it looks pretty good.
