Release from Silverton Avalanche School on Kurt Blair

On Sunday, Dec 1st, 2024, Silverton Avalanche School (SAS) was notified that a climbing party of three was reported overdue on their attempt to summit New Zealand’s Mt. Cook. The group included local avalanche educator, mountain guide, and SAS pro instructor, Kurt Blair.

Hardrock 100 Run Received the Most Applicants in History

he Hardrock 100 Endurance TRun is not only going on its 31st year of being a Silverton stakeholder event, but this late fall, the organization received the most applicants in its history, with 3,023 applicants beating the high point of 2024’s 2,796 applicants by 227 aspiring Hardrockers.

Substance Use Scholarship

Are you worried about a friend or family member’s use of painkillers, medicines or alcohol? Do you know someone who needs support for substance use treatment? San Juan County has a new Substance Use treatment scholarship fund for Silverton and San Juan County residents.

GOCO awards $315K in grants supporting Tribal youth stewardship crew and Baker’s Park trail work

DENVER– Today, the Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) board awarded a $249,073 grant to Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) to expand its Indigenous Youth Crew program, and a $66,285 grant will help San Juan County partner with SCC-Four Corners to construct the Baker’s Park Trail System near Silverton.

We would like to provide advance notice of a wall replacement and rockfall mitigation project, coming next construction season (April - November 2025), that will impact travel along the US Highway 550 mountain corridor between Durango and Silverton.

Looking Back!

40 Years Ago December 6, 1984 The search for two missing Ridgway men ended in San Juan County Tuesday morning. The vehicle was found at Cement Fill, about four miles north of Silverton. One body was found about 300 feet down the embankment, partially frozen in a creek.

On these frosty mornings the thermometer keeps up its lick by going down. They do say that the one near the depot exploded the other day, the channel in which the mercury travels not being long enough. Snowed Sunday. Cleared up Monday. Thawed on Thursday.
