Meet Fred, one of the newest residents of the San Juan Mountains. While it is difficult to tell for certain, my best guess is that this calf is a male. Fred was born near the end of May and is less than a week old in these photos. The rut, or mating season, is in the fall, meaning that moose typically give birth around the end of May or early June in the San Juans. I believe that Fred’s mother is …
