Bighorn sheep can be found throughout the San Juans, sometimes right along the highway, as was the case with the two rams in the accompanying photo. It is also not unusual to see them up in the cliffs along Highway 550 heading up Red Mountain Pass from Ouray.

They are typically found in areas with steep, rocky cliffs, which gives them an advantage against predators and other grass-eating competitor…
