Be Bear Aware this time of year

“We would encourage people not to leave screen doors or dog doors open at night. If possible, also close firstfloor windows, at least when you are not home. We know it gets hot and most of our homes do not have AC, but if a bear smells something it wants inside, they are capable of opening doors and busting through screens to get what is inside. Lock doors, both on homes and vehicles. Cars are especially important. Even if you think there is no food in your car, crumbs, or scented items such as lotion, ChapStick or sunscreen have all been known to attract bears to a vehicle. Bears are good at opening unlocked cars. If the door shuts behind them, they are not so good at getting back out.”

Silverton is starting to see more bear activity this time of year as the local bears are bulking up for their winter hibernation. Just in the last couple of weeks there have been sightings of a bear lumbering through the Northeast end of town in the early morning and the late afternoon hours.
